Ever Owned a Game Twice?

Final_Fantasy_Anthology_ntsc-frontSince the dawn of time, there have been many great games released across a plethora of gaming consoles. So many in fact that it is night impossible (not to mention really, really expensive) to own all the worthwhile games. Lucky for us, the powers that be have a tendency to re-release, re-make and re-monetize those old games in one form or another. It’s very common to see an old game released on a handheld console, maybe in a game compilation or collection form, or even remade entirely. As gamers, these are things that we should look out for. Adding that old game you’ve been looking for to your library is a great feeling. However we also have to be wary of the “duplicated game”. That is the topic I will be adressing here today. Have you ever owned a game twice? How? Why? Was it worth it? All that and more below!

The Lost Vikings

lost vikingsI’d like to take a few minutes here and turn back the clock about 15 years. I was a little mini-gamer addicted to my SNES, and renting a new game from the video store every week. Although, they weren’t always new games, there were a handful of games that I would come back to again and again. One of the ones I loved most was a little gem that I feel has never really been as recognized as it deserves; “The Lost Vikings”. I never actually owned this game, but I played it for hours upon hours. I’ve picked it up many times in the last 15 years and I have always had a good time. I would almost say it’s like re-visiting an old friend, except I’m nowhere near that corny. The game itself is pretty simple; thee Viking friends get abducted by aliens, try and escape, get lost in time and have to find their way home. That’s the story anyways, but there is so much more to it than that…

Alignment: Good or Bad?

Posted in Ramblings by Josh on November 27, 2009 1 Comment

scaleSo I was recently giving Bioware’s latest monolith of a game a try (Dragon Age: Origins, as if you didn’t know) and a few hours into the game, something struck me. I had been acting the part of the evil dude, and not once had the game popped up a message saying “Alignment down” or “-5″ or anything of the sorts. So I got to wondering, was I really not losing alignment? Surely someone noticed I just slit that guy’s throat for no reason, what gives? I found that eventually after getting long-term characters who don’t die in 10 minutes, that each one has an individual scale that goes up or down based on your actions. Now I never got very far into the game, so I can’t say much about Dragon Age here. This raised an interesting question in my head though, is having an Alignment scale a good thing, or not?

One Year Later: WotLK

Posted in Reviews, Warcraft by Josh on November 26, 2009 No Comments yet

WOTLKSo it was about a year ago as of this post that the second expansion for World of Warcraft was released. Months of scrounging around for tidbits of info from the beta testing, or even leaked alpha info, and it was now in our computers ready to be played. Wrath of the Lich King had been hyped big time for months, and I wasn’t the only person who couldn’t wait to hop online and level a Death Knight, experience the wonders of Northrend, and everything else WotLK had in store. Now here we are a year later, staring down the gates of Icecrown Citadel, soon to be released with patch 3.3. Wrath will be coming to a close in the relatively near future, and the hype is already building for expansion #3, Cataclysm. So let’s take a minute to look back at what Wrath has had to offer so far, and how it has changed the game.
