It’s Christmas time! Well technically Christmas is past now, but everyone knows it technically lasts until New Years. So instead of posting actually interesting content, heres a summary of my Christmas haul. Just to make it at least slightly interesting, I’ll say a bit about my thoughts thus far for each game.

Dragon Age: Origins – Review

Posted in Reviews by Josh on December 23, 2009 No Comments yet

Bioware’s latest game, Dragon Age: Origins, released in early November of 2009, is simply put another example of Bioware’s mastery of the Video Game medium. Even before this game came out there was little doubt, from myself or the gaming community as a whole, that this “dark epic” would be a masterpiece. By now, about a month and a half after the game’s release, pretty much anyone who plays video games knows about this game and how spectacular it is. So while if you reading this you likely don’t need me to tell you how amazing this game is, I figure I should give my official take on it. I have much more playing for this game in mind, but having almost beaten the game twice now I suppose it’s about time I add my voice to the chorus of praise surrounding this game.

Dragon Quest Marathon – Part 2

Posted in Marathons, Retro by Josh on December 22, 2009 No Comments yet

At the end of the Original Dragon Quest, our hero, descendant of the hero Erdrick (sometimes translated as Roto, or Loto) conquered the Dragon King and set out on an adventure to new lands. Taking the princess with him, the hero went and established his own kingdoms across the land. 100 years later, descendants of the hero and the princess rule kingdoms across the world, each being descendants of Loto themselves. The 100 years of peace brought about by the Dragon King’s death is ended in an instant when the evil wizard Hargon attacks the kingdom of Moonbrook. A lone survivor of the attack informs the King of Midenhall, and he sends his son the prince to defeat Hargon. The second game in the Dragon Quest series, this game takes a big step forward for the RPG genre. Released almost a full year before the original Final Fantasy, we begin to really see what makes the Dragon Quest spectacular. However being released in an age restricted by the NES’ capabilities and the RPG genre’s youth, it feels a lot like taking two steps forward and one step back.

How do you Measure a Game’s Worth?

Posted in Ramblings by Josh on December 18, 2009 4 Comments

6-10-08-dollarAs with every Christmas season, there are a whole lot of games out there to buy right now. All the more so now that I own 2 systems I did not own last Christmas. Games can be very expensive, especially now that I own a PS3. For a few years now my money has mostly been spent on Nintendo DS games, which are fairly cheap, and World of Warcraft game time. Now looking at building a library for PS3 and PSP, the potential cost is somewhat daunting. I’ve never had all the games I want. Just the other day I filled out the “My Games” and “Wishlist” lists on my Playstation Network account, and the wishlist was bigger than the games list. So how do you decide what to buy when you can’t get them all? Some people will go about it different ways, but this got me thinking. How do you actually measure a game’s worth? Logically the best investment would be the game that gives you the most enjoyment for your dollars, but how do you measure that value?

Dragon Quest Marathon – Part 1

Posted in Marathons, Retro by Josh on December 17, 2009 No Comments yet

Dragon Warrior 1Last couple days have been a little bit of “same old”, but there are a few interesting things that have come about to mix things up a bit. I’ve spent a chunk more time in World of Warcraft gearing up my characters, but most of my WoW time has been spent working on achievements, with the Winter’s Veil holiday starting this Tuesday past (15th). I have played a bunch more Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas as well, but the most notable thing that I’ve done in the past few days, is start a “Dragon Quest Marathon”. Of course there is a good chance that if you know the Dragon Quest series, you know it as Dragon Warrior. The series has had a long and twisty history in the west and so these things get mixed up a lot. The series should have been Dragon Quest all along, but was not for Copyright reasons. I believe the 8th installment of the game was the first to be called Dragon Quest in the west, but thats not what you’re here to read about now is it.
